Naturally Durable, Inc : The Pentagon Transit Center

Naturally Durable™ FSC® certified hardwood benches were included in the design of the new Pentagon Transit Center as part of the Hensel Phelps Construction Company's interest in the US Green Building Council's LEED program. Naturally Durable Inc was chosen to fabricate the benches from our kiln dried ipe.

The bench units were made from three pieces of kiln dried ipe that were fastened together with stainless steel threaded rod and separated by bronze washers. A spring assembly was imbedded in each edge of the completed bench seat to allow for slight seasonal movement of the wood along the threaded rod. Each bench was mounted on steel T beams. These 64 benches are the only wooden element in the exterior design.
